New release, more dect hardware supported

Posted in announcement, arch linux, chaox, linux, livecd, liveusb on February 16, 2009 by jensp

So here we are with a new release. The main new feature is updated com-on-air packages, which should add support for type3 cards. Cheers to the dedected.org team for making this happen! However none of the developers have a type3 card so we rely on your help for testing with type3 hardware. We now only offer one image, which should work for both CD and USB media, thanks to Damjan for the hint. Other changes include the addition of pidgin with silc and otr support, a little script to aid with the installation of propriatery nvidia drivers, a updated kernel (2.6.28.5) and your usual run of package updates. We are looking for people that are capable of doing good bug reports and own some dect hardware supported by com-on-air. If you think you can help us with that please poke jensp on irc or jabber. Enjoy the release and please report any problems you have.

IMPORTANT: This release is no longer supported, if you can’t reproduce your problem with the latest stable release we won’t help you.

new release with syslinux bootloader

Posted in announcement, arch linux, chaox, linux, livecd, liveusb on February 9, 2009 by jensp

We have received a few comments from people that couldn’t boot the previous releases, so we switched the bootloader from grub to isolinux/syslinux. We’d really like to hear from you if this improved booting. Other changes include NetworkManager 0.7, kernel 2.6.28.4 and some additional tools: Evince (PDF Reader), Lynx (Console Webbrowser), bc (calculation), mdk3 (wifi-madness :) ) and ngrep (network grep – ’nuff said). We fixed the silly bug with madwifi-tools missing in the previous releases, sorry about that.

New release with installer

Posted in announcement, arch linux, chaox, linux, livecd, liveusb on January 31, 2009 by jensp

So we finally pushed out a new release, with a (AFAIK) working installer. We are looking forward to reports of (working) installations :) and thanks for your interest in our project so far. Other updates include kernel 2.6.28.2, replacing xine with (s)mplayer adding some new security tools (iodine, bob-the-butcher and cowpatty) and the brasero disc burning application. If you want to install the livecd on your harddisk make sure you have roughly 4GB of free space. You can start the setup by typing:

sudo /arch/chaox-setup

XFCE4 > KDE4

Posted in announcement, arch linux, chaox, linux, livecd, liveusb on January 18, 2009 by jensp

So we’ve finally got a new release out, we switched from KDE4 to XFCE4 and also dropped fluxbox while at it. We’ve done some toying to make the livecd more userfriendly, the dect stuff should work much better now. Switching from KDE4 to XFCE4 also saved about 100MB of space. If your favorite security tool is missing on the CD feel free to ask us to include it. The release can be downloaded from the usual location:

chaox goes 2.6.28

Posted in announcement, arch linux, chaox, linux, livecd, liveusb on January 4, 2009 by jensp

So here we are with a new release. We finally managed to iron out the issues we had with kernel 2.6.28 and everything should be working now(tm). The new releases can be found at their usual places:

So apart from updating to 2.6.28 we added quite a lot of packages, inspired from the great time we had at the 25C3 and there we’re quite a lot of updates, too. Noticable additions are firmware for a bunch of wifi cards: atmel, ralink, broadcom, zd1211 and some intel cards. We added the com-on-air software and kismet with a matching DECT plugin, so you can have some fun fooling around with your DECT telefon system. The notorious (and rather embarrasing) bug, which caused /dev/pts not to be mounted is fixed, too :). On the eyecandy side of things we now include a usplash screen, if you feel talented we’d welcome some new artwork. Read more for the complete changelog.
