new release with syslinux bootloader

We have received a few comments from people that couldn’t boot the previous releases, so we switched the bootloader from grub to isolinux/syslinux. We’d really like to hear from you if this improved booting. Other changes include NetworkManager 0.7, kernel 2.6.28.4 and some additional tools: Evince (PDF Reader), Lynx (Console Webbrowser), bc (calculation), mdk3 (wifi-madness :) ) and ngrep (network grep – ’nuff said). We fixed the silly bug with madwifi-tools missing in the previous releases, sorry about that.

IMPORTANT: This release is no longer supported, if you can’t reproduce your problem with the latest stable release we won’t help you.

  1. Thanks for the updates.

Maybe a good addition would be airoscript and/or spoonwep2 / spoonwpa the latter being from Shamanvirtuel. I believe these would complement the aircrack suite.

  2. airoscript seems to be very outdated (written for aircrack 0.7) and spoonwep seems to be far too script kiddy friendly. We want to spread knowledge and don’t want to clutter the cd with click-and-drool tools. Thanks for your suggestions anyway, keep them coming :)

  3. airoscript has been updated January 2009. To be found here:

    http://forum.tinyshell.be/

    There is a dedicated section.

I believe it requires rc1 of the suite.

On the other hand, everyone can add these small ones by themselves if they want it.

Something else, many people use these distros inside a vm. Maybe some low RAM trimming would be usefull.

  4. Ahh thanks for the link, we’ll propably include airoscript in the next release then. We’re always trying to do some RAM trimming, it’s mainly the initramfs that uses a lot of RAM, installing chaox and creating your own initramfs with mkinitcpio should cut RAM usage down quite a bit. Another idea would be to ship a different initramfs for low-memory systems, I’ll have a look at that.

  5. isolinux is probably a better boot loader anyway since Grub is not even maintained for long time.

But I wanted to draw attention to a new isolinux feature, ie. support for “Hybrid Mode”, making an iso file that can be used on USBs too.
    http://syslinux.zytor.com/wiki/index.php/Doc/isolinux#HYBRID_CD-ROM.2FHARD_DISK_MODE

  6. Thanks for the hint, we’ll definatly look into that. We’ll have to modify the initramfs to work with CD drives as well as USB drives, but that shouldn’t be a big problem.

  7. MyKey0815 Says:

Thanks for your LiveCD. Very use full :-)
I read on dedected.org-Page that they release a functional version of COA TypeIII Cards. Can inserted the drivers in your live CD?

  8. DrSnuggles Says:

It would be cool to have the latest com_on_air rev 72 which supports type III cards too!

  9. Thanks for the input. New releases always ship with the latest revisions.
So you’ll get at least rev72 of com_on_air in the next release.

  10. Now the type III card is supported!
When do you guys release a new version?

    Joe

  11. When it’s done (TM).

No really, I can’t tell any specific date, but it shouldn’t take to long.

I can ask the packager to upload the new versions to the repository – so you can update the drivers manally. I’ll inform you when they’re uploaded.
However, be aware that no chaox mantainer is in possesion of a type 3 card. So I have to rely on your feedback.

  12. DrSnuggles Says:

Okay, great! I will test the card right away when the new release is out or when the new version is available in the repository.

  13. Hi, can someone explain what i have to edit in the boot menu when i have graphic problem?

    greets

  14. You need to be more detailed about your graphic problem.
Please read this [1] guide on how to ask questions the right way.

    [1] http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

  15. There are Freezes when i start the Gui. And then the System hangs up.

  16. Does booting into shell work? What hardware are you using (what video card?)? Are you sure the system freezes? Do the sysrq keys work?

  17. Hi, the shell mode woks. In this Laptop is a Via/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP Video Adapter.

At the most Distributions i can edit the Bootloader (like Graphic Safe Mode or something)

  18. blacklotus89 Says:

Try booting in shell mode then login as root and do a
    hwd -x
    mv /etc/X11/xorg.vesa /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    /etc/rc.d/gdm start

  19. You´re the best.

    Thanks

  20. Edit: a litte mistake in your Posting.

    hwd -x
    mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.vesa /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    /etc/rc.d/gdm start

  21. MyKey0815 Says:

How you named the script to convert the pcap-files to wav/mp3?

    Thanks

    • There is no script to directly convert pcap to wav/mp3 installed yet. But the tools needed (pcapstein, decode-g72x and sox) are all there.

  22. Только недавно попал на Ваш блог, теперь каждое утро захожу посмотреть, не написали ли чего новенького. :) К сожалению только Вы не каждый день Ваш блог обновляете :(
