Chaox is a live environment based on Arch Linux focusing on pentesting and forensics. We feature current snapshots of aircrack-ng, the dedected toolkit and forensic applications such as testdisk or foremost, along with the usual tools. For a complete list of packages check here. Want a more visual experience? Look at some screenshots. This project was originally developed with a “because we can” attitude, but we grew a more significant userbase recently, if you have any comments/suggestions/bug reports/contributions feel free to voice them in the comments of the relevant versions, in the forum or on irc.

Development stalled

Hey folks,
I don’t have the time to work on Chaox anymore, I hardly ever use my Netbook with Arch Linux since I got a proper notebook, which runs pentoo. Thanks to all the users that have trusted us :)

If you are a developer and want to continue the project, feel free to contact me, we might be able to work something out.

chaox 2009.7 is here!

So finally we got our stuff together to give you the best chaox release so far. This release comes with a huge list of changes, here are the (imho) most interesting ones. We have packaged kernel 2.6.30 and patched it for injection. We have support for proprietary nvidia drivers out-of-the-box. We added airoscript to help you getting those pentests finished faster and the slick amap port scanner from THC, which nicely complements nmap. Some tools for securing and breaking ARP are now included: arpwatch and arp-tools respectively. fast-track has been included for some instant exploit goodness. Of course this release includes the freshly released kismet newcore version 2009-06-R1. We also ship openvas, the great opensource fork of nessus. For those of you looking to recover stuff, we added fsarchiver, magicrescue and partimage. On the driver side of things we added some ieee80211 based drivers for those of you that prefer them to the in kernel drivers: rt2570-k2wrlz, rt73-k2wrlz and rtl8187-ng. To aid with switching drivers the change-drivers script was added, it may still have some rough edges, but has worked fine for us so far.

As usual we’d really appreciate some feedback on the release and suggestions for future ones.

A special thanks to our brave (and sometimes unintentional) beta testers John and Maltin – thanks for your help!

Note: For some reason we weren’t able to get gdm to autologin reliably. If you aren’t logged in automatically type “livecd” as a username and hit enter. We didn’t want to delay the release even further because of this bug.

2.6.29 kernel, xorg-server 1.6 and a bunch of new tools

Posted in announcement, arch linux, chaox, linux, livecd, liveusb on April 18, 2009 by jensp

Here we are again with a new release. A lot has been going on in linux land recently and testing all the new stuff took quite some time. If you want to help getting chaox developed faster we’d really appreciate some testers. Contact us via irc or the forum for details. So what new stuff do we have? We have the 2.6.29.1 kernel, patched for injection, ecryptfs, giskismet a tool for visualizing wireless networks, we switched to the beta version of nmap which comes with conficker detection, the packet-o-matic packet processor, polipo proxy configured to work with tor (tor button in firefox should work out-of-the-box now), sqlninja injection and takeover tool for mssql, sqlsus a similar tool for mysql and the w3af web application pentesting tool.
On the infrastructure side, the kind folks over at aircrack-ng made a subforum for us, please use it instead of the comment section if you’re asking for support, wordpress comments have become hard to maintain. If you have any problems/suggestions/whatever we’d like to hear from you! Read more for the complete changelog.

IMPORTANT: This release is no longer supported, if you can’t reproduce your problem with the latest stable release we won’t help you.

Public Service Announcement: Repositories restructured

Posted in announcement, chaox on April 5, 2009 by jensp

As you may have noticed already we have bought the chaox.net domain. We used this opportunity to restructure the repositories. The standard livecd repo has been renamed to chaox-stable in your pacman.conf you’ll have to change

[livecd]
Server = http://dev-jenux.homelinux.org/chaox-repo

to

[chaox-stable]
Server = http://repo.chaox.net/stable

However don’t get too worried, the old repo will continue to work until we can’t see anyone using it any more :)
The brave/stupid/adventurous can also try the new testing repo. However be warned it will break! If you can’t fix it yourself/provide decent bugreports, don’t bother! The broken repo only contains packages which haven’t been tested, you have to use it together with [chaox-stable]. Add the following lines above the [chaox-stable] repo.

[chaox-broken]
Server = http://repo.chaox.net/broken

Thank you for your attention :)
